COASTAL SANCTUARIES
|
- ROCAVECCHIA
Rocavecchia is located in a charming position characterized by tufaceous rocks rising steeply above the sea. In the tortuous gorges it is possible to see little caves belonging to the Medieval cave settlements that still conserve most of their charm.
It is possible to distinguish the structure of the ancient town thanks to the huge fortification walls that are almost 1 kilometre and a half long. In the inlet is the so-called Grotta della Poesia (The Cave of the Poetry) whose walls are entirely carved with votive inscriptions in the Messapian, Greek and Latin languages. The inscriptions concern a male god and refer to a maritime environment with favourable auspices for the sailing of sailors visiting the sanctuary.

- TORRE DELL'ORSO
The sanctuary, sited in a cave excavated in the rocks, is called today Grotta di S. Cristoforo (The Cave of St. Christopher) and opens on to a bay enclosed by two twin rocks. In this cave are also many votive graffito inscriptions that refer to the sailor's world.
