NATIVE SETTLEMENTS

Itinerary no. 5

- MONTE SANNACE
The ancient native settlement of Monte Sannace (inhabited by populations commonly called Peuceti), which has been recently explored and which will become an Archaeological Park, is situated in the most southern part of the Murgia of Bari, in a countryside characterized by the presence of trulli which are typical of this area. The settlement was inhabited from the Neolithic period to the early Middle Ages and it is possible to visit the houses dating from the Archaic and Hellenistic periods. The finds are kept inside the Norman Castle of Gioia del Colle.

Itinerary no. 6

- VASTE
The visit of the excavations at Vaste (area of S. Antonio) allows one to see a huge area occupied by houses of the Hellenistic period, situated around a courtyard. There are sacred areas and a palace structure belonging to the dominating social classes of the town. In the same area it is possible to see the shelters of the animals and several cisterns with channels for water distribution.

- I FANI
(see no. 3)

Itinerary no. 7

- CAVALLINO
The visit of the town, dating from the 6th century B.C. and excavated during the 1970s, allows one to observe the only archaic urban centre that is known in Messapia. It is possible to distinguish the stoneblock walls, the entrance gate to the town and the remains of houses located along the streets.

- LI CASTELLI (MANDURIA)
The settlement is placed on a very charming little hill, rich in Mediterranean vegetation, from which it is possible to see the Ionic coast that is less than 5 kilometres away. Recent excavations have brought to light, besides some parts of the fortifications and groups of burials, a huge building divided in several rooms.
